First Position Wife

Matthew 19:2-9 NRSV-CI
[2] Large crowds followed him, and he cured them there. [3] Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” [4] He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ [5] and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? [6] So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” [7] They said to him, “Why then did Moses command us to give a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her?” [8] He said to them, “It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. [9] And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery.”

Mark 10:1-12 NRSV-CI
[1] He left that place and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him; and, as was his custom, he again taught them. [2] Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” [3] He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” [4] They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” [5] But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. [6] But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ [7] ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, [8] and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. [9] Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” [10] Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. [11] He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; [12] and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

John 1:1-5 NRSV-CI
[1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being [4] in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Genesis 1:26-28 NRSV-CI
[26] Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” [27] So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. [28] God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.”

Genesis 2:4-8, 15-25 NRSV-CI
[4] These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, [5] when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; [6] but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— [7] then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. [8] And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
[15] The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. [16] And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; [17] but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” [18] Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” [19] So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. [20] The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper as his partner. [21] So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. [22] And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. [23] Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, for out of Man this one was taken.” [24] Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. [25] And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 3:20-24 NRSV-CI
[20] The man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living. [21] And the Lord God made garments of skins for the man and for his wife, and clothed them. [22] Then the Lord God said, “See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— [23] therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. [24] He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim, and a sword flaming and turning to guard the way to the tree of life.

Genesis 6:1-8 NRSV-CI
[1] When people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, [2] the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose. [3] Then the Lord said, “My spirit shall not abide in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred twenty years.” [4] The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown. [5] The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. [6] And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. [7] So the Lord said, “I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created—people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” [8] But Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord.

Jude 1:5-10 NRSV-CI
[5] Now I desire to remind you, though you are fully informed, that the Lord, who once for all saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. [6] And the angels who did not keep their own position, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deepest darkness for the judgment of the great Day. [7] Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. [8] Yet in the same way these dreamers also defile the flesh, reject authority, and slander the glorious ones. [9] But when the archangel Michael contended with the devil and disputed about the body of Moses, he did not dare to bring a condemnation of slander against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” [10] But these people slander whatever they do not understand, and they are destroyed by those things that, like irrational animals, they know by instinct.

1 Corinthians 6:12-20 NRSV-CI
[12] “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. [13] “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. [14] And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. [15] Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! [16] Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” [17] But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. [18] Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. [19] Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? [20] For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

Ephesians 5:15-33 NRSV-CI
[15] Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, [16] making the most of the time, because the days are evil. [17] So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. [18] Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, [19] as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, [20] giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [21] Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. [22] Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. [23] For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. [24] Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. [25] Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, [26] in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, [27] so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. [28] In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. [29] For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, [30] because we are members of his body. [31] “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” [32] This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. [33] Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.

1 Corinthians 5:1-13 NRSV-CI
[1] It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not found even among pagans; for a man is living with his father’s wife. [2] And you are arrogant! Should you not rather have mourned, so that he who has done this would have been removed from among you? [3] For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present I have already pronounced judgment [4] in the name of the Lord Jesus on the man who has done such a thing. When you are assembled, and my spirit is present with the power of our Lord Jesus, [5] you are to hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. [6] Your boasting is not a good thing. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? [7] Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch, as you really are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. [8] Therefore, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. [9] I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral persons— [10] not at all meaning the immoral of this world, or the greedy and robbers, or idolaters, since you would then need to go out of the world. [11] But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother or sister who is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber. Do not even eat with such a one. [12] For what have I to do with judging those outside? Is it not those who are inside that you are to judge? [13] God will judge those outside. “Drive out the wicked person from among you.”

Leviticus 18:3-30 NRSV-CI
[3] You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not follow their statutes. [4] My ordinances you shall observe and my statutes you shall keep, following them: I am the Lord your God. [5] You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances; by doing so one shall live: I am the Lord. [6] None of you shall approach anyone near of kin to uncover nakedness: I am the Lord. [7] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, which is the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness. [8] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is the nakedness of your father. [9] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born at home or born abroad. [10] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter, for their nakedness is your own nakedness. [11] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father, since she is your sister. [12] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s flesh. [13] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s flesh. [14] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, that is, you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. [15] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law: she is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. [16] You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness. [17] You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, and you shall not take her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are your flesh; it is depravity. [18] And you shall not take a woman as a rival to her sister, uncovering her nakedness while her sister is still alive. [19] You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness. [20] You shall not have sexual relations with your kinsman’s wife, and defile yourself with her. [21] You shall not give any of your offspring to sacrifice them to Molech, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. [22] You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. [23] You shall not have sexual relations with any animal and defile yourself with it, nor shall any woman give herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it: it is perversion. [24] Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for by all these practices the nations I am casting out before you have defiled themselves. [25] Thus the land became defiled; and I punished it for its iniquity, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. [26] But you shall keep my statutes and my ordinances and commit none of these abominations, either the citizen or the alien who resides among you [27] (for the inhabitants of the land, who were before you, committed all of these abominations, and the land became defiled); [28] otherwise the land will vomit you out for defiling it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. [29] For whoever commits any of these abominations shall be cut off from their people. [30] So keep my charge not to commit any of these abominations that were done before you, and not to defile yourselves by them: I am the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 27:11-26 NRSV-CI
[11] The same day Moses charged the people as follows: [12] When you have crossed over the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim for the blessing of the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. [13] And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. [14] Then the Levites shall declare in a loud voice to all the Israelites: [15] “Cursed be anyone who makes an idol or casts an image, anything abhorrent to the Lord, the work of an artisan, and sets it up in secret.” All the people shall respond, saying, “Amen!” [16] “Cursed be anyone who dishonors father or mother.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [17] “Cursed be anyone who moves a neighbor’s boundary marker.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [18] “Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind person on the road.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [19] “Cursed be anyone who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [20] “Cursed be anyone who lies with his father’s wife, because he has violated his father’s rights.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [21] “Cursed be anyone who lies with any animal.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [22] “Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [23] “Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [24] “Cursed be anyone who strikes down a neighbor in secret.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [25] “Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.” All the people shall say, “Amen!” [26] “Cursed be anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by observing them.” All the people shall say, “Amen!”
